The Iliad Athletics approach is built on a core of educational and leadership principles and practices that have been forged by experience and long study. These approaches have been proven in war and peace and apply to students, leaders, teachers, and parents alike.  
Iliad Athletics' Foundation Training establishes a baseline of knowledge and ability grounded in reality. We strive to build the foundation of a free and peaceful life.

The Iliad Athletics approach is formulated by Patrick Whalen. Patrick lives in Hillsdale, Michigan with his wife and four children. He co-founded and served as headmaster for St. Martin's Academy, a sustainable, farm-based, classical boarding school in Kansas.

Patrick is a veteran of the Marine Corps with over 11 years of service and multiple deployments. He has received many awards for leadership including the Private Paul Ison Award, The Lt. Canon Award, Honor Graduate of Officer Candidate School, and The Basic School Leadership Award.

His essays and poetry have appeared or are forthcoming in a variety of books and journals including The Michigan Quarterly Review, Arion: A Journal of the Humanities and Classics, The Marine Corps Gazette, The New Criterion, and Touchstone. Much of his work appears at the Adam's Curse Substack. He is a Hopwood Award recipient for poetry and the owner and CEO of Ad Astra Coffee Roasters located in Hillsdale, Michigan.  

Patrick holds a B.A. in Poetry from the University of Michigan, a M.A. in English from Washington University in St. Louis, and is a Ph.D. candidate in English at Washington University in St. Louis.
